Rescuers have found five of seven villagers alive in a flooded cave in central Laos after more than a week of being trapped. The group was stuck in the cave due to heavy rain that triggered flash flooding, blocking the exit. The discovery was made by a team of divers who braved the treacherous waters to reach the stranded villagers.
The villagers, from Xaisomboun province, entered the cave on May 19, but became trapped when the flooding occurred. A rescue mission was launched, involving teams from Laos and Thailand. The rescuers, including diver Mikko Paasi, have been working tirelessly to reach the trapped villagers, bringing them food and provisions.
Flooded Cave Rescue Efforts
The rescue efforts have been challenging, with divers having to navigate through tiny passages and deal with the physical strain of the operation. Paasi described the diving portion as “very difficult” and said the rescuers are exhausted, with bruised knees and elbows from shimmying through the passages. The ideal plan would be to pump water out of the cave, but concerns about carbon dioxide buildup and the villagers’ strength to make the journey out have raised doubts.
Videos have shown the moments of joy and relief among the rescuers, both inside and outside the cave, when the five villagers were found alive. The rescuers plan to give the villagers a test run with scuba gear on Thursday to assess their ability to make the treacherous journey out. Paasi, who was also involved in the 2018 rescue of 12 schoolboys and their soccer coach in northern Thailand, is working to develop an overall plan that includes water pumps and additional expert divers.
Next Steps and Challenges
The rescue operation is ongoing, with the teams facing challenges such as accessing submerged parts of the cave and dealing with the rugged terrain and heavy rain. The rescuers are seeking government permission and immunity in case the situation takes a turn for the worse. The cave’s location in a remote area, about 75 miles north of the capital Vientiane, has made the rescue efforts even more difficult.
The discovery of the five alive villagers brings hope to the families of the missing, but the rescue operation is far from over. As the teams continue to work tirelessly to bring the villagers to safety, the incident highlights the risks and dangers of exploring caves, especially in areas prone to flooding.
