Three men have been sentenced to nearly four years in prison for stealing a 2,500-year-old Romanian golden helmet from a Dutch museum. The sentences were handed down by a court in the Netherlands for the theft of the Coțofenești helmet, which dates back to around 450BC.
The helmet, along with three gold bracelets, was snatched by an armed gang that broke into the Drents Museum in Assen over a year ago. The items were on loan from Romania’s national history museum as part of an exhibition on the Dacia civilization.
Romanian Golden Helmet
The Dutch authorities recovered the helmet and two of the three bracelets after striking a deal with two of the suspects. The third bracelet is still missing, and the search for it is ongoing. The prosecution called for a 44-month sentence for the two suspects who agreed to the plea bargain, while the third suspect faced a possible 66-month sentence.
The court ultimately imposed a 47-month sentence on all three men, citing the serious nature of the offenses. The theft sparked outrage in Romania and raised questions about the security of artifacts on loan to other countries.
The treasures had been on display as part of an exhibition telling the story of the Dacia civilization and people who lived in present-day Romania before the Roman conquest in 106AD. The former head of the national history museum in Bucharest faced criticism for loaning the gold objects abroad and lost his job after the theft.
Implications and Reactions
The theft prompted a dispute between the Dutch and Romanian governments, with the Dutch government paying $6.5 million in insurance compensation. Romanian officials have not disclosed what will happen to the compensation now that most of the treasure has been recovered.
The recovery of the helmet and two bracelets was seen as a significant victory for the authorities, with Romanian prosecutor Rareș-Petru Stan praising the “hard work and keeping the faith” of his Dutch colleagues. The investigation into the theft is ongoing, with authorities still searching for the missing bracelet.
