Spencer Pratt’s lead over Nithya Raman in the Los Angeles mayoral race has narrowed to just 1% as of the latest update from the LA County Registrar-Recorder, with 78% of the votes counted.
The mayoral race remains unresolved, with incumbent Mayor Karen Bass already projected to advance to the runoff, where she will face either Raman, a Democrat, or Pratt, a Republican. The latest results saw Pratt’s advantage over Raman shrink from nearly 6% on Thursday to just 1% on Saturday, with Pratt holding 27.3% of the vote to Raman’s 26.2%.
LA Mayoral Election Update
The tightening race has significant implications for the city’s future, with Bass waiting to learn who she will face in the November election. Pratt, a reality TV star, had been confident of his chances, but his lead has been eroding since election night.
Under California’s top-two primary system, the two candidates with the most votes will advance to the general election, regardless of party affiliation. The outcome of the mayoral race will have a major impact on the city’s policies and direction, with Bass, Raman, and Pratt offering different visions for the city’s future.
Election experts, including Paul Mitchell of Political Data Inc., say that Pratt’s lead is shrinking, and it’s unclear whether he will hold on to the second spot. “The question is, will he drop? Will Nithya Raman rise? And at some point, will there be an inflection point where Nithya Raman would take over that second spot?” Mitchell said.
California Governor’s Race
The California governor’s race also remains unresolved, with former US Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra projected to advance to the general election. Becerra, a Democrat, would become the first Latino governor of California in 150 years if elected.
Republican challenger Steve Hilton, a former Fox News host, is battling for the second spot on the November ballot, with billionaire environmentalist Tom Steyer, a Democrat, in third place. The outcome of the governor’s race will have significant implications for the state’s policies and direction, with the winner set to succeed term-limited Governor Gavin Newsom.
