A British actress faces life in prison for allegedly smuggling 320kg of meth into Australia, with an estimated street value of $208 million.
The 34-year-old actress, who has appeared in several TV shows and films, was charged with attempting to import a commercial quantity of methamphetamine into Australia. She was refused bail and is due back in court in August. The meth was hidden in bags of charcoal in shipping containers from Ghana.
Methamphetamine Smuggling
The actress, along with a couple from South Australia, allegedly tried to import the meth, which was detected by border authorities at Sydney’s Port Botany. Authorities found a “white crystalised substance” after X-raying the contents of the containers, which were listed as bags of charcoal. Further testing confirmed it was meth.
The Australian Federal Police launched an investigation in April and removed the drugs from the shipment before it was delivered to a storage facility in Sydney. The actress was arrested after she supervised the unpacking of the container and loaded several bags into a car.
Police also arrested and charged a woman and a man in Adelaide for allegedly using false identities to rent the storage units in Sydney where the drugs were delivered. The seizure of the meth has prevented a potential 3.2 million deals from reaching Australian streets.
Investigation and Arrests
The Australian Federal Police and the Australian Border Force praised their officers for their efforts in detecting and seizing the meth. The case highlights the lengths to which criminal syndicates will go to disguise illicit drugs, including embedding them in everyday goods like charcoal.
The investigation and arrests demonstrate the importance of cooperation between law enforcement agencies in preventing the smuggling of illicit drugs. The actress’s case will be back in court in August, and if convicted, she could face life in prison.
