The US has fired on multiple Iranian vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, escalating tensions between the two nations. The US Central Command said it had disabled two Iranian-flagged oil tankers attempting to enter an Iranian port, while also preventing over 70 tankers from entering or leaving Iranian ports.
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi accused the US of opting for a “reckless military adventure” instead of pursuing a diplomatic solution. The clashes come as the US and Iran are engaged in a fragile ceasefire, with the US maintaining a naval blockade of Iranian ports to exert pressure on Tehran.
Iran US Conflict
The Strait of Hormuz, a crucial waterway for global oil and liquefied natural gas trade, has been a focal point of the tensions. Some 20% of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas passes through the strait, and its blockage has sent prices soaring. The US has been trying to free over 2,000 vessels stranded in the area since February.
US President Donald Trump said the ceasefire was intact, despite the clashes, and that the US had destroyed multiple small boats, missiles, and drones. Iran’s top military command alleged the US had targeted an Iranian oil tanker and another vessel approaching the Strait of Hormuz, and carried out “aerial attacks” on several coastal areas.
The US and Israel have been launching attacks on Iranian targets, while Iran has been retaliating by controlling the Strait of Hormuz and attacking US allies in the Gulf. The US is seeking a peace deal that requires the full disarmament of the Shia militant group Hezbollah, but the group rejects the talks.
Peace Talks and Implications
The US has signaled its readiness to host a new round of Israel-Lebanon talks next week, aimed at halting the clashes in Lebanon between Iranian-backed Hezbollah and Israeli forces. The talks will aim to deliver “lasting security for Israel, and sovereignty and reconstruction for Lebanon”.
The US Vice-President JD Vance met Qatar’s Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani in Washington to discuss Pakistan’s mediation efforts between the US and Iran. The Qatari PM urged all parties to engage with the negotiations to address the “root causes of the crisis” and achieve “lasting peace”.
The rising tensions between the US and Iran have significant implications for global oil prices and regional stability, and the situation remains volatile as both sides accuse each other of launching attacks. The conflict has the potential to escalate into a broader regional war, with far-reaching consequences for the global economy and international relations.
