Hollywood writer-director Carl Rinsch has been sentenced to 2 1/2 years in prison for defrauding Netflix out of $11 million. Rinsch, 48, was convicted of federal wire fraud and other charges in December. He had told Netflix he needed the money to finish a sci-fi series called “White Horse,” but instead used it to buy luxury cars, watches, and other high-end items.
Rinsch’s sentencing came after a hearing where supporters, including actor Keanu Reeves, asked the court to show leniency. Rinsch apologized for his behavior and acknowledged that “real harm was caused.” He also stated that he is now addressing his mental health struggles and medication problems with a new care provider.
Netflix Scam Details
Rinsch had initially received $44 million from Netflix for “White Horse” in 2018 and 2019, and then requested an additional $11 million in 2020 to complete the project. However, instead of using the funds for the show, he diverted the money into a personal account and made a series of failed investments, losing around half of the $11 million in a couple of months.
Prosecutors said Rinsch then used the remaining funds to buy luxury items, including five Rolls-Royces, a red Ferrari, and $652,000 worth of watches and clothes. He also spent $638,000 on two mattresses and $295,000 on luxury bedding and linens. Rinsch will also have to pay $11 million in restitution and will be subject to three years of supervised release after his prison sentence.
Reactions and Implications
U.S. District Judge Jed S. Rakoff stated that Rinsch’s mental health difficulties “may explain some of the excesses” but don’t “detract from the court’s conclusion that he was determined to lie to get substantial monies from Netflix, lie to cover it up.” The sentencing sends a strong message that fraud will not be tolerated, according to U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York Jay Clayton.
Rinsch’s lawyers have announced that they plan to appeal the case. The sentencing is a significant development in the case, highlighting the consequences of fraudulent activities in the entertainment industry. As the entertainment industry continues to evolve, the need for accountability and transparency in financial dealings is becoming increasingly important.
