Dozens of Nigerian fishermen are feared dead after Chad’s military launched air strikes on Boko Haram militants in the Lake Chad region. The strikes, which occurred on Friday, are believed to have hit fishermen who were in the area, with estimates suggesting over 40 may have died.

The incident occurred after Boko Haram militants attacked Chadian military bases near Lake Chad, killing at least 24 soldiers and two generals. Chad’s presidency said it had carried out “intensive air strikes” on Boko Haram strongholds in response to the attacks.

Lake Chad Region Violence

The Lake Chad basin is a vast region of waterways and swampland shared by Nigeria, Chad, Niger, and Cameroon, and has long been a stronghold for Boko Haram and its rival faction, Islamic State West Africa Province. The area has seen a rise in attacks on security forces, as well as kidnappings and raids on communities.

Local fishermen’s leader Abubakar Gamandi Usman said that Boko Haram controls access to the fishing grounds, transporting fishermen to and from the fish market to the fishing site, and collects taxes from them. The search for the missing fishermen has been slow, with some parts of Lake Chad being very deep and the local community having limited access to canoes.

Chadian military operations have been accused of causing civilian deaths before, with dozens of Nigerian fishermen reported killed during air strikes targeting Boko Haram fighters on Tilma Island in Lake Chad in October 2024. Nigeria’s military has also been accused of claiming civilian lives during operations against armed groups and jihadist fighters.

Regional Implications

The incident highlights the ongoing violence and instability in the region, with Boko Haram and other militant groups continuing to pose a threat to security forces and civilians. The air strikes also raise concerns about the potential for civilian casualties and the need for military operations to be carried out with caution and precision.

The situation in the Lake Chad region is complex and multifaceted, with regional and international efforts needed to address the root causes of the conflict and bring stability to the area. As the region continues to grapple with the challenges posed by Boko Haram and other militant groups, the incident serves as a reminder of the need for a nuanced and sustainable approach to addressing the conflict.
