John Travolta was awarded a surprise honorary Palme d’Or at the Cannes film festival, leaving the 72-year-old actor visibly moved. The honor was presented to him while premiering his directorial debut, Propeller One-Way Night Coach.
Travolta, known for his iconic roles in Pulp Fiction, Grease, and Saturday Night Fever, held back tears as he accepted the prize, saying it was “beyond the Oscar.” The crowd applauded as he exclaimed in French, “A complete surprise, I cant believe this.”
Honorary Palme d’Or
The honorary Palme d’Or is the Cannes equivalent of a lifetime achievement award, recognizing outstanding contributions to the film industry. Travolta, who has been nominated for two Academy Awards, called receiving the award “a humbling moment.”
Propeller One-Way Night Coach, a family adventure film set in the “golden age of aviation,” is based on Travolta’s own 1997 children’s book. He wrote, directed, and co-produced the film, which will premiere on Apple TV’s streaming service later this month and also stars his daughter Ella Bleu Travolta.
Cannes Film Festival
The Cannes film festival is also honoring Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson and performer Barbra Streisand with honorary Palme d’Or awards this year. This surprise award is not unprecedented, as actors Denzel Washington and Tom Cruise received similar honors in previous years.
The recognition of Travolta’s contributions to the film industry serves as a testament to his enduring legacy and impact on American cinema. As the film industry continues to evolve, awards like the honorary Palme d’Or remind us of the importance of honoring the pioneers and legends who have shaped the medium.
