A 52-year-old Australian man, Matthew Cameron Paton, died after falling down a 984-foot ravine while hiking the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu in Peru.

Paton, a 16-year police veteran, was hiking with a group of tourists and a guide on Wednesday when he fell through a broken railing near the “50 Gradas” section of the trail. His body was recovered on Thursday by the High Mountain Rescue Unit in the city of Cusco.

Machu Picchu Hike Accident

The incident occurred when Paton apparently tripped while crossing a wooden bridge and grabbed onto the railing, which gave way, causing him to fall into the ravine. Authorities are investigating the cause of the fall.

Paton was a dedicated family man and police officer, with 16 years of service. He was set to start a new role as senior sergeant next month. His family said they were “shattered” by his death, adding that he had always wanted to travel to Peru.

The Police Association of Victoria and Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Mike Bush expressed their condolences, remembering Paton for his “selflessness, amazing sense of humour, extreme kindness and inclusion of all”.

International Response

The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is providing consular assistance to Paton’s family. The incident serves as a reminder of the risks involved in adventure travel and the importance of ensuring safety measures are in place.

The death of Matthew Paton is a tragic reminder of the dangers that can occur when exploring remote and rugged terrain, and it highlights the need for travelers to exercise caution and be aware of their surroundings when engaging in adventure activities.
