An Iraqi national has been charged with plotting to carry out a terror attack on a prominent New York City synagogue, federal prosecutors announced Friday.
Mohammad Baqer Saad Dawood Al-Saadi, 32, faces charges including conspiracy to provide material support to Iranian-backed terrorist organizations. He allegedly planned to target a Jewish institution in Manhattan, choosing it because it was a “beacon for solidarity and support to Israel.”
Synagogue Terror Plot
Al-Saadi, a commander for Kata’ib Hizbollah, allegedly plotted with an undercover law enforcement officer to carry out the attack. He provided the officer with photos and maps of the target synagogue, as well as other Jewish centers in Los Angeles and Scottsdale, Arizona.
Prosecutors say Al-Saadi has been involved in planning and executing approximately 18 reported terror attacks in Europe and two in Canada against US and Israeli interests. He allegedly posted propaganda videos about these attacks on social media.
Al-Saadi was arrested in Turkey and turned over to the FBI, who brought him to the US on Thursday. His attorney claims he is being prosecuted for his alleged relationship with slain IRGC leader Qasem Soleimani.
Implications and Reactions
The plot’s disruption has been praised by law enforcement officials, who say it highlights the global threat posed by the Iranian regime and its proxies. “These charges show American law enforcement will never let such evil go unchecked,” said Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche.
The incident comes amid a rise in antisemitism across the US, with NYC officials vowing to take action against hate crimes. “Antisemitism, violent extremism, and terrorism have no place in our city,” said NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch.
The foiled plot serves as a reminder of the ongoing threat of terrorism and the importance of international cooperation in preventing such attacks, highlighting the need for continued vigilance and cooperation to protect communities from harm.
