International outrage has erupted over a video showing Israel’s far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir taunting handcuffed pro-Palestinian activists, sparking widespread condemnation from the US, UK, France, Italy, and Canada.
The incident occurred after Israeli naval forces intercepted a Gaza-bound aid flotilla in international waters west of Cyprus, detaining over 400 activists from more than 40 countries. The activists were taken to Israel’s Ashdod port, where Ben-Gvir posted a video showing himself mocking the detainees, kneeling with their hands tied behind their backs.
Gaza Flotilla Crisis
The Global Sumud Flotilla set sail from Turkey last Thursday, carrying a token amount of aid, but was intercepted by Israeli naval commandos on Monday. The Israeli foreign ministry claimed the action was an “illegal, high-seas aggression” and that no live ammunition was used, but activists reported being subjected to physical abuse, Tasers, and rubber bullets.
A rights group representing the detainees, Adalah, said at least three people were taken to hospital and later discharged, with dozens suffering from suspected broken ribs and difficulty breathing. The group also reported cases of severe degradation, sexual harassment, and humiliation.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu criticized Ben-Gvir’s actions, saying they were “not in line with Israel’s values.” The US ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, called Ben-Gvir’s behavior “despicable,” while UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper described the video as “totally disgraceful scenes.”
Global Reactions
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney described Israel’s treatment of the activists as “abominable,” and instructed officials to summon the Israeli ambassador. Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong also condemned Ben-Gvir’s actions, joining a growing chorus of international criticism.
The incident has significant implications for Israel’s relationships with Western governments, which have already imposed sanctions on Ben-Gvir and another minister for inciting violence against Palestinian communities. As the international community continues to condemn Israel’s actions, the broader significance of this incident lies in its potential to further escalate tensions in the region and undermine efforts towards a peaceful resolution.
