A devastating plane crash in eastern France has left 11 people dead, including five skydiving instructors and five first-time jumpers. The pilot was also among the victims. The incident occurred in the town of Tomblaine, near the city of Nancy, when the civilian aircraft suddenly crashed at around 11:00 local time.
The plane, which was being used by a parachutist school, had taken off from Nancy-Essey airfield just before the crash. Local officials reported that some of the victims’ relatives witnessed the tragedy, as they had gathered to watch their loved ones take part in tandem jumps. The Paris prosecutor’s office has launched an investigation into the cause of the incident.
Eastern France Plane Crash
The crash is the deadliest private plane accident in French history, excluding military and commercial flights. Half of the skydivers who died were nurses, who had likely taken the jump to unwind during a difficult time with a heatwave gripping the region. Medical and psychological support teams have arrived to care for relatives and witnesses.
The plane hit the ground near the edge of the airfield, narrowly missing a residential area and a shopping center. Local officials say the accident could have caused collateral casualties if the plane had fallen just a few meters closer to the houses. The prefect of Meurthe-et-Moselle, Yves Seguy, described the scene as “almost vertical, in the immediate vicinity of a housing estate”.
A witness reported seeing the plane veering off to the right before the crash, and hearing the sound of the impact. When he arrived at the site, he tried to help extinguish the wreckage, which had caught fire. The mayor of Tomblaine, Hervé Feron, said the plane fell from the sky “in a completely unexplained manner”, and it was too early to try to find explanations.
Investigation and Aftermath
The cause of the crash is still unknown, and French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez has declined to speculate ahead of the official investigation. The incident has sparked an outpouring of support for the families of the victims, with many expressing shock and sadness at the tragedy. The investigation will likely examine various factors, including weather conditions, which may have played a role in the crash.
The crash has raised concerns about aviation safety, particularly in the context of private plane accidents. As the investigation unfolds, it is likely to shed more light on the circumstances surrounding the tragedy and potential measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
