A simple compliment from a stranger in a convenience store gave a breast cancer survivor the confidence to face the world without her wig during chemotherapy.

Pat Gentile, a college dean in her late 50s, had been undergoing treatment and was feeling exposed and anxious about how people would react to her new appearance. But when a woman approached her in the store and said, “Not everybody could wear a hairstyle like that. You look fabulous,” Gentile’s perspective changed.

Breast Cancer Survivor

Gentile had lost all her hair during chemotherapy and initially wore a wig, but it was itchy and annoying. She eventually decided to stop wearing it, but felt self-conscious about her appearance. The stranger’s kind words made a significant impact on her, giving her the courage to continue with her daily life without the wig.

Gentile never forgot the woman’s compliment and credits it as a turning point in her recovery. She says it inspired her to be kinder to others and to acknowledge what they might be going through. Gentile donated her wig and completed her chemotherapy, and has had no evidence of cancer since 2011.

The encounter also made Gentile realize the importance of treating others with kindness and respect, especially during difficult times. She still thinks about the woman who complimented her and strives to make a similar impact on those around her.

Impact of Kindness

The story highlights the significance of small acts of kindness and how they can have a profound impact on someone’s life. Gentile’s experience shows that a simple compliment can give someone the confidence and courage to face their challenges head-on.

The incident also underscores the importance of treating others with empathy and understanding, especially those who may be going through a tough time. By sharing her story, Gentile hopes to inspire others to be kind and compassionate towards those around them, and to recognize the power of their words and actions.
