A giant sulcata tortoise, named Rex, was found roaming the streets of a Phoenix suburb, sparking a community effort to find its owner and highlighting the challenges of owning these large reptiles.
Rex, who is at least a couple of feet long, was discovered by a group of neighbors, including a 5-year-old girl who spotted him moseying down the sidewalk while eating dinner with her family.
Sulcata Tortoise Care
Sulcata tortoises, like Rex, can grow up to 200 pounds and live up to 150 years, requiring large outdoor enclosures, clean water, and dry shelter, but many owners are not prepared for the responsibility.
According to Dan Marchand, founder of the Phoenix Herpetological Sanctuary, sulcata tortoises are often sold as novelties with little information on their care, leading to many being abandoned or surrendered to sanctuaries.
Marchand’s sanctuary is home to about 700 sulcata tortoises, many of which were found wandering the streets or left behind by owners who could no longer care for them.
Community Response
The community came together to help find Rex’s owner, with neighbors working together to care for him until he could be reunited with his owner.
Rex’s story highlights the importance of responsible pet ownership and the need for education on the care and needs of sulcata tortoises, which are becoming increasingly popular pets in the US.
The incident also underscores the challenges faced by sanctuaries and rescue organizations, which are often overwhelmed with surrendered or abandoned sulcata tortoises.
As the popularity of sulcata tortoises as pets continues to grow, it is essential for owners to be aware of the long-term commitment and responsibility involved in caring for these gentle giants, and for communities to come together to support responsible pet ownership and animal welfare.
The story of Rex, the wayward tortoise, serves as a reminder of the importance of considering the needs and welfare of animals before bringing them into our homes, and the significance of community involvement in promoting animal welfare and responsible pet ownership.
