A devastating blast at a paper mill in Washington state has left two people dead and nine others missing, with no survivors expected. The explosion occurred on Tuesday at the Nippon Dynawave Packaging facility, where a tank containing a highly-corrosive industrial chemical ruptured, spilling hundreds of thousands of gallons of white liquor.
The incident has resulted in a massive recovery effort, with crews searching for the missing individuals, but their mission has shifted from rescue to recovery due to the hazardous environment. Seven people were injured, including a firefighter, and one of the injured later died, bringing the confirmed death toll to two.
Washington State Explosion
The blast has released a large volume of contaminants into the Columbia River, but local drinking water and air quality remain unaffected, according to officials. The tank, which still contains about 25,000 gallons of the chemical, is slowly leaking, posing a significant hazard to the recovery teams.
Photos from the scene show the ruptured tank, as well as crushed and overturned vehicles, highlighting the severity of the explosion. The recovery process will be slow and methodical, with crews wearing special gear to protect themselves from the chemicals.
Washington Governor Bob Ferguson has deployed the National Guard to assist in the recovery and clean-up operations, describing the explosion as the “deadliest industrial accident in modern Washington history”. One of the victims has been identified as Gilbert Bernal, a grandfather and employee of the facility, who was remembered by his daughter as a selfless man who loved his family.
Recovery Efforts
The incident has raised concerns about the safety of the facility, which was also the scene of a major fire in July 2023. The Nippon Dynawave Packaging facility employs 1,000 people and produces a range of paper products, including tissues, printer paper, and cups.
The recovery efforts will continue, with a focus on treating every victim with dignity and respect. The incident serves as a reminder of the risks and hazards associated with industrial accidents, and the importance of prioritizing worker safety and environmental protection.
