A United Airlines flight from Newark to Spain was forced to turn around midflight Saturday due to a possible security threat triggered by a passenger’s Bluetooth device named with a suspicious word.
The Boeing 767, carrying 190 passengers and 12 crew members, departed from Newark Liberty International Airport around 6 p.m. but returned to the airport at 9:37 p.m. after the crew reported a passenger disturbance.

Air traffic control audio revealed that security inspected the aircraft, including the cargo area, after someone named their Bluetooth device a “certain four-letter word.” Passengers were asked to turn off all Bluetooth devices, but two devices remained on, prompting the flight to communicate with the airline’s headquarters in Chicago.
The flight was eventually escorted back to the airport, where passengers were evacuated and re-screened by TSA and Customs and Border Patrol. A replacement flight with a new crew took off early Sunday morning and landed in Palma de Mallorca, Spain, in the afternoon.
